Living with physical limitations is one of the toughest things. There is never a day where we do not make use of our body parts to perform various activities. Imagine living with just one hand instead of two or imagine having no vision or hearing disability. Wouldn’t it be difficult to face everyday challenges without these essential things?

People with physical limitations face loads of complications in their everyday life. Hence, there are a number of things that have been invented in order to make life somewhat easier for them.

Handicapped lifts is one such piece of equipment that is specially designed for such people. Climbing stairs can be a very difficult exercise for handicapped people and these lifts prove immensely handy. You must have come across many lifts for the handicapped. Usually, handicapped lifts are the lifts that are reserved only for people with physical limitations. There is a handicapped lift in almost every hospital and medical institute around the world and also in some organisations and in public places.

Many disabled people are not able to stand for a long time without proper support and hence at times it becomes difficult for such a person to stand in the lift. One of the advantages of handicapped access lifts is the fact that disabled people can sit in these lifts instead of standing. Moreover, normal lifts have many people using them at the same time and hence this too can lead to discomfort of a disabled individual.

You can even have a handicapped lift installed in the house. This type of handicapped lift is different from the handicapped lifts in public places. These handicapped lifts are available in a form of a chair. The disabled person simply has to sit in the chair. The chair has buttons which are easily accessible by the person using it. The usual buttons are for up and down and also emergency stop. Usually, these handicapped home lifts are installed right next to the garage. Hence, once the lift comes down, the disabled person can be transferred into the vehicle easily. This way the person can get out of the car and transfer to the lift without too much trouble. The lift would rise upwards and the person can easily get into the house from the special door made for this purpose.

You can even come across a number of handicapped home lifts over the internet. These lifts are available in various forms and you can opt for one depending upon the purpose and the need.

Handicapped Parking Is for the Handicapped

Article by The Hoss

In order to take a brake from our Internet activities, The Hoss from his money magazine and Mrs. Hoss from her child abuse website, we occasionally walk to our local coffee and donut shop. We enjoy these outings, as it gives us a chance to discuss the joys and frustrations of our life. However, our latest sojourn was an unpleasant experience due to the numerous people we observed misusing the designated handicap parking space.

Handicap parking spaces are for the explicit use of people with limited mobility (usually those unable to walk 50 meters) not for the convenience of someone to run in and buy coffee (or other items). On the day in question, we arrived at the coffee shop and noted there was a motorcycle parked in the designated handicap parking space (no handicap decal). That was only the first of three violations we noted during the 30 minutes we were in the booth, sipping our coffees and munching on our donuts.

When the motorcycle driver left, a car pulled into that same spot, again no handicap decal. Two young girls jumped out (no obvious handicap) and ran into the coffee shop, purchased a coffee and a snack and then left.

They were followed by a car which pulled in and did have a handicap decal. A woman left her car and entered the store. She obviously had full mobility and seemingly had no business parking in the handicap zone.

Mrs. Hoss gets very upset with people who abuse the use of handicap parking spots, and especially those who abuse the privilege of a handicap decal. A friend of ours, who has since passed away, used to transport his handicapped mother to her various appointments. He had a handicap decal so they could utilize the handicap parking spaces which are always located close to a building entrance and allow for space for a second person to help when a wheelchair, cane or walker is required. Our friend got in the habit of using that decal even if his mother was not in the car. When we were with him, Mrs. Hoss would make him move out of the handicap parking area. She refused to let him abuse the privilege.

The point is, handicap parking must be maintained for those who really need it, not for the convenience of non-handicapped people. It is time for people to band together and report handicap parking violations when they see them. If we don’t, handicapped people will have no places to park.

The Hoss is a man who due to a combination of good financial planning, sound decision making and some luck was able to retire at age 49. The Hoss and Mrs. Hoss live in British Columbia, Canada and enjoy being able to do what they want when they want. His website is http://free-financial-money-magazine.blogspot.com

Handicapped Ramps: Temporary or Permanent

handicap ramp
by Sustainable sanitation

Article by Kevin Germain

When thinking about wheelchair access many questions arise. One of the first questions that clients ask is about whether the handicapped ramp should be a permanent one or only temporary. Most often I recommend temporary handicapped ramps be installed. This is because the need is usually temporary especially for use at ones home. Many times ramps are built to meet the need for a temporary portion of time such as a parent coming to live, or a child breaks their leg or a stroller needs easy access in and out of the home. These are all temporary situations in which once the need is over life resumes as normal and the path way into the house does not need to be ramp form.

Permanent handicapped ramps are a beautiful addition to any home if the need is there. If the occupant is going to be living in the home for a long period of time and is in need of a handicap ramp they can be built to blend right in with the home’s exterior often using wood or metal as the material to build the ramp. However, once a handicapped ramp is in place you cannot pick it up and move it. It does not go with you. This is one of the biggest reason people will choose to install temporary ramps.

Temporary ramps are made out of lightweight metals allowing them to be transferred easily form one place to another. Temporary handicapped ramps come in two basic models; short or long. The style you choose for your handicapped ramp will be based upon your individual need. Shorter ramps are in general more portable than longer ones although the longer ones can often be turned into shockingly small sections. Also be aware the shorter the ramp the greater the angle from point A to point B. This can be scary when talking about getting in and out of a car even with an empty wheelchair. It is also harder to also get the wheelchair back up into the vehicle because of the steeper slope.

Longer handicapped ramps are the more desired type amongst temporary handicap ramps. They are more expensive than shorter ramps but the extra places you are able to access will be well worth the expense. Even thought they fold up into small packages to travel with you they are still very strong and durable. You may find this to believe but some of the portable, temporary ramps can fold down to the size of a large suitcase and can hold upwards of four hundred pounds.

Another area where you might want to look into temporary handicap access is the threshold with in your home. Often these barriers, which are no more than two to three inches, can be a big pain for a wheelchair to climb over. For situations such as these it is recommended that you purchase small temporary handicapped ramps or threshold ramps depending on the size of the threshold.

Whatever the need is for your life or that of someone you love the product is available to ease the mobility issues in their life. Small temporary wheelchair ramps ease task such as getting into the shower. It is so much easier to wheel yourself to the upper shelf of the shower threshold and then transfer onto a bathing chair than to lift yourself a number of inches up and then over. Help your loved one by looking into ways to ease their access and making mobility a joy again.

Successful Handicapped Bathroom Refurbishment

handicapped bathroom
by LauraFries.com

Unlike normal remodeling, when you start creating a bathroom refurbishment for a handicapped individual, I suggest you start thinking a little bit differently. What needs to be taken into account is that the whole world changes when you live it through a wheelchair and bathroom access can often be especially frustrating if you need to deal with smaller entry doors, tiny interiors and at times features could be downright unwelcoming. One of the first things that should be taken into account when doing a bathroom refurbishment is the best way to make it more accessible for the person using it so the fist thing to consider is obviously the doorway. For comfort of entry, you will need to have at least a 36 inch wide door framed into the opening and unlike a conventional door, you must make sure that when it opens it swings outward rather than inward. Now that we have established a comfortable way for someone to get in, let us take a good look around and determine what other items are suitable to be adjusted. Hopefully the second thing that pops into your head as part of your bathroom refurbishment is the commode. The height in all probability will have to be raised to make it easier for a person to transfer between it and the wheelchair. Additionally you’ll want to install transfer bars on each side so a person can use their arms to move from one to the other. From the commode, naturally a person is going to want to wash their hands. To ensure this is an easy process, use sinks that are professionally mounted to the wall, once again ensuring you pay particular attention to the height. All of the fixtures are better off being lever operated and easy to reach. Also pay attention to the mirrors so that grooming becomes easy and quick. Be sure to provide a considerable amount of storage around the right height to be sure that cosmetics and toiletries can be easily stored and very easily reached. Ok, now let’s get ready to tackle the shower. You’ll want to have a roll through shower installed when you plan this bathroom refurbishment. This makes getting in and getting out a breeze for anyone using a wheelchair. Many models now come built with a shower seat and again, convenient-to-use fixture. The last item on the agenda is among the most crucial in the overall plan. And that is you want a at least 60 inches in the center of the bathroom so that a wheelchair can be maneuvered rather easily. In many cases, this might cause a problem and entail some structural changes. If it does, then before you make an effort to do so, consult a professional builder. If you want to possess a bathroom refurbishment that has the utmost simplicity of use, then you need to let Mobility Works For Homes become your company of choice.
